Privacy policy
Last updated: 11 October 2026
Unreel is a browser extension that changes how Instagram looks on the web. It has no account, no analytics, no ads, and it never sells or shares your data. This page explains exactly what it stores and what leaves your browser.
What Unreel reads
Unreel runs only on www.instagram.com. To hide parts of the page it looks at the page's structure and short labels (for example "Sponsored" or a "Follow" button). It does not store, copy or send the content of posts, messages, profiles or searches.
What Unreel stores, and where
- Your settings, in Chrome's sync storage. If Chrome Sync is on, Chrome copies them to your other signed-in browsers. Unreel never receives them.
- Minutes spent on Instagram per day for the last 90 days, and your answers on the "pause" screen, in your browser's local storage.
- Your Pro license key, if you buy Pro, in your browser's local storage.
- A few working values in local storage: when you were last on Instagram (for the pause screen), setting changes waiting for the commitment lock, and the current rules file.
Uninstalling Unreel deletes everything it stored locally.
What leaves your browser
- Rules updates. Once a day Unreel downloads a small public file (
rules.json) from this website with updated labels, so it keeps working when Instagram changes. The request contains no personal data; like any web request, the host (GitHub) can see your IP address. - Pro license checks. If you enter a license key, Unreel sends the key and the product ID to Gumroad to confirm the purchase, and checks again about once a week. Gumroad's privacy policy applies to your purchase.
- Problem reports. "Report a problem" opens your own email app with a draft you can edit or discard. It includes the Unreel version, your browser version and language, the kind of Instagram page (for example "profile"), and which settings are on. It never includes addresses, usernames or content.
- Uninstalling. Chrome opens a short goodbye page on this website. Nothing is sent with it.
Children
Unreel is not directed at children under 13.
